We’ve noticed there has been a little confusion on the districts downtown, so we wanted to help educate!
The Historic Broad Street district is what most everyone knows as Downtown Rome, but did you know there’s a whole other district within downtown? The River District is the up and coming part of Downtown Rome, adjacent to the Historic Broad Street district across the river. The Oostanaula River separates these districts.
Both sides of the river pay into what we call the Business Improvement District, which helps pay for events, grants, and more! Several of our businesses in this district have taken advantage. For example, Sunflour Community Bakery received a marketing grant from the DDA and Aventine received a façade grant!
The River District has been in the plans for over a decade! It was officially included in the Downtown Master Plan completed in 2012. In 2017, funds from SPLOST were dedicated to a streetscape project for this area. Water and sewer updates are currently being conducted thanks to a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission. A full design of the streetscape is also being completed . This will hopefully begin being put into place once the water and sewer updates are completed!
The River District is filled with businesses both new and old! Some businesses like Yellow Door Antiques and Art and The Foundry have been in the River District for years! In 2018 the Courtyard Rome Riverwalk officially opened right along the river. This spurred more development. You can now find Aventine, Blossom Hill, and Sunflour Community Bakery in the area that once had no food options. New stores are also starting to pop up, such as Trendy Teachers! And don’t forget you can catch a show at The RAD Playhouse along North 5th!
Loving these plans for the River District in beautiful downtown Rome, Ga ♥️
